Craters of the Moon visitation tops a quarter million
Craters of the Moon National Monument recorded 255,436 visits in 2016. During its first year of operation in 1925, the monument recorded 3,349 visitors. “National park tourism is a significant driver in the national economy, returning $10 for every $1 invested in the National Park Service, and it’s a big factor in our local economy as well,” said Craters of the Moon Superintendent Wade Vagias. “We appreciate the partnership and support of our neighbors and are glad to be able to give back by helping to sustain local with an estimated 8.4 million dollars in local economic benefits in 2015.” A resolution that calls on Congress to make Craters of the Moon Idaho’s first national park is currently in the legislature. The bill passed the Senate and is currently in a House committee. Legislators say the only financial impact of the change to national park status could entail heavier tourist traffic that might call for adjustments for safety or passing lanes. Some sign changes would be required at the federal level. The memorial demands that all states rights, the rights of current users, and use of Highway 20/26 would be protected.
