Warning: beware of unlicensed adjusters

Unlicensed persons are attempting to act as public adjusters, negotiating claims for damage caused by recent rainstorms.

The Idaho Department of Insurances warns people to be cautious when approached by anyone offering to help settle your claim or offer advice about insurance coverage or insurance claims.

Legitimate public adjusters are required to be licensed and bonded by the state of Idaho to protect consumers. The department said reputable, licensed adjusters typically will not also provide the repair work or act as the contractor. They will also not engage in door-to-door solicitation.

The department offered advice to people thinking about hiring a public adjuster to assist with a claim.

Make sure the person is licensed. You can search the department website to see if a purported adjuster is licensed here. Adjusters are hired by signing a contract that states you agree to pay them a fee or commission based on a percentage of the settlement, or other methods of compensation. Always carefully read any documents before you sign anything and get copies of everything. Remember that even if you sign an agreement, your may still contact the insurance company, its adjuster, or any other person involved with your claim. Consider whether a second opinion should be obtained. Remember that you have the right to choose who completes the repair work. While adjusters may have relationships with contractors, any compensation they receive from contractors must be disclosed to you as the policyholder.
