Work resumes at Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project

Fluor Idaho has resumed work in all of its “glovebox” facilities at the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory site.

The Idaho Cleanup Project has reviewed its safety measures after a June 5 puncture incident involving a Fluor Idaho employee at the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project. Most operations resumed on June 26.

Work in the super compactor area of the plant resumed last week as additional improvements were implemented.

Following an initial review by a Causal Analysis Team, Fluor Idaho identified the need to update its operating procedures to reflect potential hazards that an operator may encounter.

A “glovebox” is a sealed glass or Lexan enclosure used for radiological and hazardous waste treatment and repackaging work. The improvements include the installation of thicker Hypalon gloves within the gloveboxes and the requirement that operators were puncture-resistant sleeves.

Once the causal analysis is complete, additional safety measures may be implemented.
