First “lead safe” home finished in Pocatello

The City of Pocatello announced Wednesday the first home to take part in the new “Lead Safe and Healthy Home” program was finished.

As part of the new program, the house was searched for anything with lead, and items meeting the criteria were removed. Some additional changes were also made to the exterior of the house, like new side paneling and a front door, all free of charge.

A $1.5 million grant was given to the city from HUD, the city then decided to undertake this project, aiming to make over 80 homes in Pocatello “lead safe.” Given a three year window to meet the goal, the grant can renew with satisfactory results.

People looking to apply must live in a home built prior to 1978 and fall among the lower income brackets.
