Civil War goalpost spray painting tradition discontinued

The long-standing tradition of spray painting the football goalposts after a ‘Civil War’ victory in Bonneville School District 93 has been put to rest.

Bonneville High School Principal Heath Jackson and Hillcrest Principal Scott Miller said the decision to discontinue the tradition comes after years of voiced concerns.

“The primary concern is for student safety,” Principal Jackson said. “During the last several years the goal posts have been significantly bent, weakening the structural integrity of the goalposts, creating concerns of the goalposts breaking and falling on students.”

Jackson said if the posts were to break, that would create issues with game schedules while the posts were being replaced.

He also said there have been several instances of vandalism where spray paint was sprayed on other locations including the grass, blacktop, track, fence and even vehicles in the parking lot.

And with the end of a long-standing tradition, a new one is born.

A new traveling trophy will be presented to the winning team after the game.

“The tradition of high school football and this rivalry itself will continue to create excitement in our school communities,” Jackson said.
