Grass Fire Burns In Pocatello

Firefighters in Pocatello are battling a grass fire in the west part of the city.

Our Brittany Borghi reports the fire is along U.S. Highway 30. The grass fire has spread to cars and tires at Wayne’s Auto and Salvage on Hwy 30, police said. Thick black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky from around town.

Any explosions people may have heard came from the salvage yard, police said. There were no propane gas tank explosions, police said. AmeriGas, which is right next to the salvage yard, was a top concern for firefighters. They worked to protect the business and stopped any fire from burning on its property.

Once the wind pushed the brush fire onto the salvage yard property, firefighters said it became extremely difficult to fight because they couldn’t go on the property for safety reasons.

Two buildings at the salvage yard were destroyed in the blaze.

There’s no word yet on the amount of damage or how many acres burned.

Firefighters said they still have at least two hours left battling the blaze. There have not been any injures, police said.

Parts of the highway are closed in that area.

Borghi is at the fire. She’ll have live reports starting tonight at 5.
