Provo Considers Lifting Sunday Ban On Beer Sales
The Provo City Council is considering lifting a decades-long ban on Sunday beer sales.
The council has voted to further discuss the issue at a Sept. 20 study session.
Councilman Sterling Beck says the city is losing revenue because residents are driving south to Springville to buy beer on Sunday. Orem to the north and Provo both ban Sunday sales.
Councilman Rick Healey says he is concerned about changing the moral fabric of the Provo community but thought it was important to discuss the matter after receiving an email from a business owner.
Stores cover refrigerated beer cases on Sundays or close entire shelves.
The council also will discuss how to handle beer sales on New Year’s Day, which is Sunday in 2012, and other nuances of liquor laws.
