Sheriff’s Office Warns About Phone Scam

The Bannock County Sheriff?s Office has issued a warning on a phone scam in which the scammers ask people if they would like to renew their driver?s licenses.

Deputies are reminding residents that a license can only be renewed by self-initiated email to the state of Idaho, by mailing in a state renewal form or by going directly to a county driver?s license office.

The primary target is the elderly, but the sheriff?s office added that the scammers have contacted other members of the population.

?These con artists are professionals and may come across quite sincere, but we must get the point across: Don?t give out your credit card number or personal information to any phone solicitor,? Capt. K.G. Fonnesbeck said. ?Once they have this information, you often don?t discover that they have placed numerous charges to your account until your bank statement or credit card statement comes, and there is very little we can do if you get caught up in one of these scams due to the fact that in most cases they are calling from outside the U.S. borders. We cannot emphasize this point enough.?
