New Mall To Remake Downtown Salt Lake City
A developer hired by the Mormon church is opening the retail portion of a $2 billion development in downtown Salt Lake City.
Officials expect 50,000 shoppers and curiosity seekers to flock to City Creek Center on opening day Thursday.
It’s a village-like shopping center that sprawls over two city blocks, with outdoor walkways covered by retractable glass roofs.
The mall will be closed on Sundays in a nod to its landowner, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
But the developer, Taubman Centers Inc., says it’s operating City Creek Center like its other upscale malls, including the Beverly Center in Los Angeles and Denver’s Cherry Creek Shopping Center.
The Salt Lake City mall is anchored by condo towers that were built by a business arm of the Mormon church
