Afton Elk Herd Meeting Set

For the past five years, the average population of the Afton elk herd has numbered approximately 2,300 animals. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s objective population for the region is 2,200.

Department spokesman Mark Gocke says the herd populates an area that includes the Star Valley and Grey’s River drainage and encompasses hunt areas 88, 89, 90, and 91.

At the present time, the agency does not propose any change in the overall number, but will consider public comments at a special meeting set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 22rd, at the Afton Civic Center.
