Young grizzly killed by vehicle in Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton National Park rangers are investigating the death of a young male grizzly bear just before 9 am Thursday. The bear was struck by a vehicle about one mile south of the Snake River Overlook on Highway 26/89/191. The unidentified driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported to St. John’s Medical Center in Jackson for treatment.

The driver told rangers he was swerving to avoid hitting another vehicle that had stopped in the road and was attempting a U-turn to view the bear. A passerby called 911 to report a single vehicle roll-over.

It was the first bear fatality caused by a vehicle on park roads this year.
