Boise smoking ban in bars gets mixed reviews
The decision earlier this year by Boise officials to ban smoking in the city’s bars is earning mixed reviews.
Bar owners say the ban has reduced bar traffic and cut deeper than expected into monthly revenue. Meanwhile, The Idaho Statesman reports bars in nearby Garden City, where smoking is still allowed, has increased.
City leaders continue to stand by their decision, saying the prohibition has earned praise from bar employees and patrons pleased with the smoke-free environment.
The City Council approved the smoking ban last year and the new rule went into effect in January.
Quinn’s Restaurant & Lounge owner Gary Sullivan says he projected a 10 percent decline in sales after the ban. But he says his loss is closer to 70 percent.
