Bomb hoaxers threaten Rigby High School again

The same bomb threat hoax that caused an evacuation of Rigby High School last spring occurred Tuesday morning.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies secured Rigby High School around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday after a caller claimed there was a bomb in the building. Sheriff Blair Olsen said a conversation with the caller and phone records quickly determined the call was a hoax originated through an individual in a European country an eastern state.

School is not in session and a few faculty members and support staff were the only people inside the high school building Tuesday morning.

It was the same scheme used to create another identical threat at Rigby High School earlier this year.Olsen said he is trying to work with necessary federal officials to ensure the threats do not continue in the future.

Rigby High sophomore Nick Barton said he wasn’t surprised to hear about another bomb threat.

“I guess we always get that in Rigby now,” said Barton.

He remembers back in May when the entire school faced evacuation.

“It was a little nerve-wracking when we were there at first,” said Barton.

But this time around, the nerves have settled and he chalks it all up to a practical joke.

“I was kind of calm about this one, because the first one I assumed was a prank because of senior prank day, so I’m just kind of assuming this is another one to start off the school year,” said Barton.

Over at the superintendent’s office, Dr. Ron Tolman said there is another connection between the two threats.

“It actually turns out we think it’s the same folks who called earlier last spring,” said Tolman.

With two bomb threats at the same school within the course of just months a lot of people are asking, “Why Rigby?”

“I think it is completely random. Maybe not so much now because they’ve done it before. I think it’s just primarily for entertainment for their own twisted and sick purposes,” said Tolman.
