Biker killed when rear-ended by school bus

A man driving a dirt bike was killed after being hit by a school bus Tuesday.

A citizen told the Wyoming Highway Patrol Dispatch Center in Cheyenne about two dirt bikes traveling through Afton southbound on U.S. Highway 89 with no lights.

A trooper was sent to look into it, but about 10 minutes later, the dispatch center got another report – this one of a crash with one of the dirt bikes and a school bus.

The driver of the southbound school bus, Peggy K. Faddis, 51, told troopers she did not see the unlit motorcycle until it was too late, and she rear-ended the motorcycle at about 8:30 p.m. Upon impact, the motocycle became lodged under the right front of the school bus, and the man on the dirt bike, Troy L. Turner, 36, was ejected.

Turner came to reset in the barrow pit on the right side of the roadway. Faddis pulled over to the right shoulder of the road.

The school bus was an activity bus from Uinta School District transporting a freshman football team home to Evanston after a game. Twenty-two students were on the bus, as well as three coaches. No one on the bus was hurt.

A school bus from Star Valley School District transported the bus passengers to a church in Afton. The students were eventually transported by bus to Evanston.

The southbound lane of the highway was closed for 45 minutes while troopers investigated the accident.

The driver of the second dirt bike was operating his motorcycle in the dirt barrow pit at the time of the crash and was not involved in the incident.

Police said the motorcycle traveling without lights is a factor and are investigating the crash. They said Turner was not wearing a helmet.
