Missing Challis girl would be 28 Friday

It has been 19 years since Stephanie Crane was reported missing in Challis. The then-young girl would have celebrated her 28th birthday with family Friday, Sept. 28, 2012.

The Custer County Sheriff’s Office said Stephanie was last seen at about 6 p.m. on the night of Oct. 11, 1993, walking toward Challis High School. She had been at a bowling alley right across the street from the school. Her family’s home was about 500 yards away.

Custer County Jail Supervisor Linda Dubiel was serving as dispatcher when Stephanie’s mother reported her missing at 8:15 that night. She recalls a major search was launched immediately, but turned up no sign of the missing girl.

But, although the trail went cold, Dubiel and the sheriff’s office have not given up. Based on a new lead, their latest effort was another search in an undisclosed location in the mountains near Challis last spring. It ultimately produced no breakthroughs.

Stephanie’s case is still open and active in Custer County and with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The center has produced a time-enhanced picture of what the girl might look like today.

“You never know,” said Dubiel. “Somebody just might remember something.”

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the sheriffs office at (208) 879-2232 or the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at (800) 843-5678 (THE-LOST) and they can remain anonymous.
