D91 Kicks off “One Book Project”
District 91 kicked off its “One Book Project” Friday. The project is designed to promote reading and literacy in Idaho Falls.
Idaho Falls Mayor Jared Fuhriman stopped by Fox Hollow Elementary School today to reveal this year’s book to students.
“Today we are handing out books to every student from kindergarten through sixth grade, and it’s ‘The Cricket in Times Square’ by George Selden,” said Fuhriman.
Second-grader Morgan French said she is eager to share the exciting day with her parents. “I will tell that the mayor came and gave me this book, and I will read the first chapter and answer a question,” said French.
The program encourages students to read a chapter of the book each night with family members and answer trivia questions at school the next day.
“I’m gonna take the book home and read the first chapter and I’ll find the answer,” said Zach Mills, a second-grader at Fox Hollow Elementary.
“I mean, with all the distractions, with all the multi-media and computers and things like that. It’s important to that we have books and teach kids the fantasies and stories that there are. So this is a great program,” said Fuhriman.
The books were purchased through donations by District 91 parents, several local companies and organizations.
