Annual “Penguin Plunge” raises money for Special Olympics

It may be spring, but temperatures are still cold. Regardless, the Special Olympics of Idaho held its annual “Penguin Plunge” Saturday afternoon.

Those willing to brave the cold water could walk, jump and swim in the frigid cold temperatures of the pool to raise money in support of the Special Olympics.

The man in charge of the fundraiser, Bingham County Sheriff Deputy Jake Johnson, says he hopes to raise money and awareness for the Special Olympics.

The money raised will help buy uniforms, medals and fund local Special Olympics events.

“It is so important. We’re part of the law enforcement torch run and the Special Olympics…it was just a perfect match,” said Johnson. “Law enforcement, we’re guardians of the flame, we run the flame of hope all over the world.”

The event raised $5,000 — beating last year’s total of $4,000.
