Boise-bound trucks bring pitbulls hope

The community of Pocatello is helping the Holbrook pitbulls that are currently in Boise receiving assessments and care.

They are bringing the animals hope by the truckload?

“They may be a pitbull, but they’re still a dog and animal that needs some care,” said John’s Paint and Glass owner Steve Leaman.

The president of the Portneuf Animal Welfare Society, or PAWS, agrees.

“A lot of people are afraid of pitbulls,” said JoLynn Anderson, PAWS president. “I think you have to be cautious with any dog. And it’s all with how a dog is trained and treated.”

She understands that you can’t save every animal.

“If some of the dogs have to be euthanized,” Anderson said, “My feeling is that at least they have known some love, some kindness and they will have been fed.”

But that doesn’t mean she won’t try. And she is not alone.

Which is why PAWS and several community members are working on truckload number four of food that will be Boise-bound next week.

“We’d like to have their name and their address, and we will send them a receipt.,” Anderson stated. “My organization is a non-profit 501-C3, and they will get a receipt and it can be deducted on their taxes.”

Today they sent about 1,000 pounds of dog food.

To put this into perspective, a 50 pound bag of dog food holds about 200 cups. If you feed one cup a day, that bag is gone in about three days.

However, bigger dogs tend to eat more, so the food goes quickly.

PAWS is also accepting monetary donations.

Leaman says all the donations are carrying a Pocatello spirit with them.

“I think the community is really an animal area, and when stuff like this goes on, it doesn’t take long for people to start helping,” Leaman said. “And they’ve done great.”

The next truckload is scheduled for sometime next week.

“We’ve got so much, I’m probably going to have to take my horse trailer.”

This dog food drive is ongoing until the situation with the pitbulls becomes resolved.
