Man arrested after rescuing woman from burning car

The man police said caused a crash at Eighth and Center in Pocatello on Thursday night rescued another driver before he was arrested on an aggravated DUI charge.

Police said 33-year-old Emery Rudolph Beckles Jr. was driving a white Cadillac Escalade on Center Street around 10:45 p.m. when it crashed into the passenger side of a Chevy Cavalier traveling southbound on Eighth Avenue.After the crash, both cars continued eastbound on Center Street.

The throttle of the Cavalier was stuck wide open and its front tires continued to spin. The right front tire of the car shredded and caught fire.The car rolled backward against the north curb of Eighth Street.

Police said Beckles left his car and pulled the driver of the Cavalier, Danette Fredericksen, out of her burning car.She was transported to Portneuf Medical Center and admitted to its intensive care unit with serious injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.Beckles was being held in the Bannock County Jail.
