Pocatello standoff ends with arrest

Pocatello police arrested a man Thursday morning after an hours-long standoff with police.

Police were called to a domestic disturbance around 3 a.m. Jason Vanorden, 26, had left the house by the time they arrived.

Around 4:30 a.m., they found him elsewhere in Pocatello — a house on the 400 block of North 10th Avenue.

He refused to talk with officers.Around 7:30 a.m., the man left the house and barricaded himself in his pickup. He went into the house a few times, bringing clothing out with him.

Police said he threatened officers with a knife and told them he had a gun. Officers talked with him in the hopes of negotiating a peaceful surrender. Negotiations broke down when Vanorden came out of the pickup waving a knife, they said.

Neighbors said police fired a beanbag shot, then grabbed Jason Vanorden, 36, out of his truck through the window around 10 a.m. Police said Vanorden suffered minor injuries due to self-inflicted wounds to his wrists. He was arrested on charges of domestic battery and resisting arrest and was booked into the Bannock County Jail.

Police said there are no other people were involved.
