Heinz announces closure of Pocatello plant

The Heinz plant in Pocatello is closing its doors.

The facility, which employs 410 people, will join two other Heinz locations in having its production shifted to existing factories in the U.S. and Canada within the next six to eight months.

“Our decision to consolidate manufacturing across North America is a critical step in our plan to ensure we are operating as efficiently and effectively as possible to become more competitive in a challenging environment, and to accelerate the company’s future growth,” said Senior Vice President of Corporate & Government Affairs Michael Mullen in a statement Thursday.

Mullen said the company would offer severance pay and help workers to find new jobs.

“We appreciate the many contributions these employees have made to Heinz, and we are committed to treating all employees with the utmost respect and dignity,” Mullen said.

Mullen said the company “regrets the impact” the closure will have on employees and their communities. Heinz only came to this decision after “thoroughly exploring extensive alternatives and options,” he said.

The other affected Heinz locations are in Florence, S.C., with 200 employees, and Leamington, Ontario, with 740 employees.
