Woman hurt in dog fight

One woman was injured by seven of her roommate’s dogs late Tuesday night in Idaho Falls after they tried to break up a dog fight.

Police say they got the call to the 100 block of College Street just after 9 p.m.

“One lady’s shoulder has got several, several bite marks, several punctures” said Irene Brown, Idaho Falls Animal Services supervisor. “It’s got a puncture in the ear. She got her ear pierced.”

Police said the victim, Marci Shelton, is otherwise OK. However, the dogs’ owner, 54-year-old Carlos Eligio Trevino Sr., is dead. Shortly after the fight, he complained of being tired and went to another room to sit down. Shelton checked on Trevino a short time later, and he wasn’t breathing.

Brown said the dogs’ behavior was typical pack mentality.

“One of our recommendations is never try to break up a dog fight with your hands,” said Brown. “Grab a broom, grab something that you can use because you’ll end up getting bit.”

Six of the dogs were pit bulls, while another may have been a pit bull mix. The mix has been euthanized, while the six others have been placed in quarantine.
