National Nutrition Month sparks health discussion
In recognition of National Nutrition Month Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center is devoting a segment from its Healthy Living series to healthy meals and snacks.
Dietitian Megan Donnelly will talk about the importance of portion control and eating healthier whole foods.
“The big thing is just portion sizes, planning ahead, and trying to eat more of your own food that you cook yourself,” she said. “About 50 percent of the meals we (Americans) eat are eaten away from home.”
Idaho Falls resident Brent Swanson said he could attest to that. Although he works out as much as he can and tries to limit his fast food intake, he still falls victim to temptation of unhealthy foods.
“I probably have a bigger dessert than I should have when I eat out,” he said, “but I try to start my morning off right with a combination of fruit and grains and granola.”
Experts say a poor diet can lead to serious health risks that include diabetes, heart disease, and many other preventable illnesses.
Donnelly will explain many of these risks and the art of nutrition at the Healthy Meals and Snacks seminar at the EIRMC Medical Office Building, Classroom No. 205 on Wednesday, March 12 at 5:30 p.m.
