Wyoming gay marriages still on hold
Uncertainty over whether gay marriage is allowed in Wyoming is keeping same-sex couples from marrying in the state even now that the U.S. Supreme Court is upholding gay marriage.
In Laramie County, the county clerk continues to set aside gay couples’ marriage license applications, including one filed Tuesday morning. The delay prompted the couple and other same-sex couples to file a federal lawsuit seeking the right to marry immediately.
Laramie County is a defendant in a state lawsuit contesting Wyoming’s prohibition against same-sex marriage. Laramie County District Judge Thomas Campbell has yet to rule in that case.
University of Wyoming constitutional law professor Stephen Feldman says Wyoming officials now are legally bound to grant same-sex marriage licenses after the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear gay marriage appeals.
