2014 “good year” for land conservation

A Pocatello-based conservation group said 2014 has been a “good year” for conservation.

In 2014, the Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust managed to acquire conservation easements for five parcels of land, including two donated parcels in Caribou County.

Both are located near the Blackfoot Reservoir about a 30 minute drive from Soda Springs and contain valuable wetlands.

“The family intends to use it for livestock grazing. Our hope is just to see that use continue and that the water quality is improved and enhanced by some habitat management plans,” said Jerry DeBacker, executive director of the Land Trust.

The Land Trust also got conservation rights for a couple of land parcels on the Wyoming border from JR Simplot.

To date, the trust manages 19 parcels of land across eastern Idaho.
