Blackfoot students to compete in statewide competition
Middle school students from Idaho Science and Technology Charter School are going to Boise Wednesday, to take part in a statewide competition.
It’s part of the We the People program, a class that teaches kids about the government and much more.
“They’ve realized their voice is important, and that they can have opinions, and that our past history actually relates so much to our current history,” said Shalene Summers, their teacher.
“Our voting makes a big difference in our government because if my vote doesn’t count, other people could think that, that could impact how the government could work,” said student Braxton Bird.
Summers says her students probably didn’t know what they were getting into when they first signed up for the class, but the students have been very open to it.
“It’s a really good experience for right now so that later in life we can talk and speak to people we can learn to present our ideas,” said Lauren Anderson, a student in the class.
These students will be the only middle-schoolers in the competition. They’ll be going up against high school students.
“This is a huge deal, this is a big deal. I’m so proud of them,” said Summers.
