2 arrested in connection with New Year’s killing

Two people were arrested in connection with a New Year’s Day killing in Idaho Falls.

Nubia B. Castillo-Mendoza, 20, and Keith W. McQuilliams, 26, both of Idaho Falls, were arrested on felony warrants for accessory to involuntary manslaughter for harboring Kevin McQuilliams, 25, who is suspected of killing his girlfriend, AnnaRae Ponce, at a party.

Police said an argument broke out at the party on the 900 block of South Emerson, and Kevin McQuilliams fired a gun. The bullet struck and killed Ponce, 34, of Pocatello. Officers said McQuilliams did not intend to kill Ponce.

Castillo-Mendoza and Keith McQuilliams, who were with Kevin McQuilliams at the party, drove Kevin McQuilliams back to his home in Pocatello and helped him to gather clothing and get his child so he could flee law enforcement and get out of the area, police said.

Authorities in Truckee, Calif., arrested Kevin McQuilliams on charges of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault on the evening of Jan. 1. His child was placed into protective custody.

Kevin McQuilliams is still being held in California and is fighting being sent back to Idaho.

Castillo-Mendoza and Keith McQuilliams were booked into the Bonneville County Jail on Tuesday.
