Students making valentines for veterans

Valentines Day is just around the corner and with it comes roses, chocolates, and maybe a night out. For our military veterans, especially those in the hospital, it can be a tough holiday.

That’s why forth graders in Mrs Garner’s class at Hibbard Elementary School chose to make hundreds of valentines to bring a bit of heart felt cheer to veterans. “I think its very nice,” said Samara, a student in Mrs. Garner’s class. “And I feel like sometimes they need attention.”

The afternoon activity helped the students express their creativity, and it gave the Veterans for Valentines organizer, Diedre Mason, a chance to explain the importance of protecting our freedom.

“My grandfather served in Iwo Jima and then all of my brothers have served,” said Mason. “I know the value of the service they give to our country.”

Mason says she plans to ship some of the valentines the very night after the kids made them. She’ll then take the rest of the valentines to the Pocatello Veterans Clinic in person.
