2015 American Dog Derby cancelled

The American Dog Derby won’t be happening this year.

It was supposed to be Feb. 19 to Feb. 21 in Ashton, but the warmer temperatures prompted the organizing committee to unanimously decide Thursday not to hold it in 2015.

“While bare spots might be covered, the larger problem was the general condition of the trail. With the recent warm days and cold nights, the surface of the trail is hard and icy but easily broken through into the slush beneath,” said Chet Kendell, who does public relations for the event. “This becomes an even larger problem as temperatures rise during the course of the race day.”

The committee said these conditions would not be safe for teams and mushers.

Event organizers are planning for the event to resume in 2016.

The dog derby started in 1917.
