Woman starts blog for love of Poky

For the Love of Poky is the name of a new blog started by Angeline Underwood, a student and professor at Idaho State University.

“I’m just kind of plugging away at my master’s and just kind of going at my own pace,” said Underwood.

The blog she started is to show, ‘Why living in Pocatello, Idaho doesn’t suck.’

“Everybody always says, ‘Oh, Poky sucks,'” she said.

She said she hears thoughts like that all the time that Pocatello is the like an armpit – nothing too exciting there.

“Get out there and experience it. That’s kind of what I talk about in my first blog, is that even if you live in a big city, everybody’s like, ‘Oh, there’s so much more to do in a big city,'” Underwood said. “But you still have to go out there and participate in it. And there’s stuff to do here too. You just have to get out there and participate in it.”

So far Underwood’s blog, which she started as part of a class, has five posts. The assignment for the blog was to address something controversial. She said she hears arguments all the time about Pocatello being good or bad, and one part of the argument is culture, or what some say is a lack thereof.

But as she writes in her blog, “I think the real issue here isn’t a lack of culture, it’s a lack of involvement…. So all you Poky haters, get out there and experience all the good that our little town has to offer.”

She went on to list a variety of types of entertainment, university activities, and bars and pubs. She concluded part of her blog by saying, “So we have good food, some great theatre, education, diversity and nightlife. Seems pretty cultured to me.”

Underwood wrote about several topics, including dates for Valentine’s Day and ‘Pizza from the Gods,’ the title of her blog regarding MacKenzie River pizza.

“It definitely is time consuming to work on, but it’s really rewarding,” she said. “I’m finding out a lot about my town that I’ve lived in for 34 years that I didn’t know about.”

She said while it started as a class assignment, it’s turned into something she really enjoys.

“The blog thing was just kind of, ‘Eh, blog. Yeah, I’ll work on it,'” she said. “But it’s actually been so interesting and so rewarding and I hope to continue it. I hope that I can for sure.”
