Eastern Idaho school districts seek supplemental levies
93 out of 115 school districts in Idaho collect supplemental property tax levies.
A decade ago only 54districts were asking for levies from patrons.
Many districts say the trend began when former Gov. Jim Risch was in office back in 2007.
Lawmakers approved a tax shift that eliminated most school property taxes. The state raised the sales tax to make up the difference before the recession.
This year 17 districts in just Eastern Idaho are asking for support of levies from $90,000 to more than $9 million
The districts are required to put the levies up for public vote every two years.
