Challis volleyball star wins academic award
It may be a small high school but what Challis lacks in numbers it makes up for in school spirit with students like Brielle Sheppeard.
Sheppeard thinks being in a smaller high school with only a couple hundred students is an advantage.
“For me, it’s been awesome,” Sheppeard said. “You have a great connection to the teachers and staff and it’s just really fun to learn that way. You can learn and have one-on-one teacher time.”
Sheppeard has also had on-on-one coaching time as a member of the volleyball team.
“Volleyball’s been my whole life basically,” Sheppeard said. “I started playing when I was born practically. My mom’s the head coach here and I have always just loved it. Through the years I’ve gotten better and grown to like it more and more, and it’s always been my dream to play at the college level and I’m really excited.”
After graduation, Sheppeard will be playing volleyball at the College of Idaho. She wants to study medicine and become a physician’s assistant. Sheppeard loves serving. She recalls how she felt when her youth leadership group fixed up a women’s shelter.
“The feeling that it gave me to help them was awesome and ever since then I’ve wanted to help my community because they’ve given me so much,” Sheppeard said.
Sheppeard works hard in school and currently gets perfect grades. Science and math are her favorite subjects.
“For math, it’s definitely because there’s an answer,” Sheppeard said. “There’s not a wide range of things. For science, it’s always changing and there’s always new stuff you can learn in science.”
