20th Annual Homeless Stand Down at ISU

More than 30 non-profit organizations hosted the 20th Annual Homeless Stand Down today inside Reed Gym at ISU.

Homeless individuals of the community were offered free bus transportation to Reed Gym. There, they were offered free hot meals, hair cuts, showers, and clothing for the winter. The gym was their one-stop shop for many more resources as well.

Chair of Eastern Idaho’s Homeless Stand Down, Susan Thurm says the event takes place every year in October to prepare them for the cold winter months. She also says they were offered opportunities for housing as well.

“I’m hoping it makes them feel good. As they see the amount of volunteers here for them, helping them get through the stand down. Whether they’re in a wheelchair, we have volunteers to help them. Or someone to say, hey would you like a hot breakfast? Or hot shower…let’s go get you a haircut,” said Thurm.

There were over 100 homeless participants with over 300 volunteers. The Homeless Stand Down is always looking for volunteers however they may help.
