ISU student saves a life and receives award
A student at ISU received an award today from the Public Safety Department for reporting a child left alone in a car during an unusually warm day in Oct.
Freshman Hannah Raschke reported a 1-year-old boy early last month in a car without any parents or guardians around. She says as she was walking back to her car from class as she heard a child crying alone in the car parked next to her.
She says, at that moment she didn’t know if she was going to wait to see if a parent would return soon, or if she should call ISU’s Public Safety right away.
No parents or guardians did return. She called Public Safety as they responded within 5 minutes. They gained access to the car and rescued the little boy who was crying and sweating.
Public Safety says the father was arrested that day for leaving the child in the car for approximately 4 hours while he attended classes.
Today, Raschke’s family accompanied her as she received a very prestigious award from Public Safety.
She says she’s glad she reported the incident when she did, or else the story would have ended differently for the little boy.
