Keep your bank accounts safe

It seems like we hear about a hacking into a computer system or bank account more often these days.

This week, people in Texas are reporting to their bank of fraudulent charges from Walmart and Sam’s stores.

These reports are similar to those reported in Eastern Idaho.

Last month, nearly 200 customers at East Idaho Credit Union reported their accounts were hacked. Many of those charges from Walmart.

Gavin Gee, director of Idaho Dept. of Finance, said the accounts were probably hacked from a retailer’s data collection system, not necessarily Walmarts.

Gee said the financial institutions did everything they were required to do, by issuing new credit cards and reimbursing those funds back to the account owners.

Last month’s hack involved 30 institutions in 9 states and other countries, Gee said.
