Jefferson County adds cemetery maps to GIS service
Jefferson County’s online mapping system now includes new information on a rather old place: interactive cemetery maps.
Information on all county cemeteries is available, but Rigby’s Pioneer Cemetery in particular offers detailed information on specific plots. Viewers are able to view satellite and other images of the cemetery, and search for the deceased by name.
County leaders say its the first of its kind system in Idaho. They also say it one of the big benefits is creates an easy option for people doing genealogy research.
“The information is all loaded up. So the public can view the Pioneer Cemetery and they can see who is interred in different plots,” said Rebecca Squires, the Jefferson County public information officer. “The project has a search option. So if I look up Johnson, it will show me the Johnson’s that are buried in the cemetery and show me where those people are interred.”
Squires says that while some cemeteries have a lots of data available, others need help gathering that information. She says if someone wants to help a cemetery gather the information, they should contact that cemetery directly.
