Highway 26 closes temporarily for elk migration
US Highway 26 near Ririe was closed for about ten minutes Thursday morning while a herd of about 100 elk crossed the road.
Idaho Department of Fish and Game spokesman Gregg Losinski said the elk had migrated down to an area farm. Fish and Game personnel used food as a lure to help move the animals towards the Tex Creek Wildlife Management Area, where they hope the animals will stay.
Losinski said the animals have plenty of forage, so an organized feeding operation is not planned.
The Idaho Transportation Department and Idaho State Police are posting signs near the area to warn motorists of active wildlife movement in the area.
