Pocatello hosts Youth in Government Day

Twenty local students got a behind the scenes look at local government during Youth in Government Day on Wednesday.

Members of the Pocatello Youth Advisory Council had the chance to participate in hands-on activities in different city businesses. This was to help them learn first-hand what it takes to for different parts of the city to operate.

Students could select which department they wanted to work in for the day.

One local student chose the Pocatello Zoo where she got to help put together meals for animals.

Nataijia Leishman is a sophomore at Highland High School. She spent the day learning about animal diets, endangered species and how the zoo works.

She even got to dissect some mice for meals. She said even though the mice weren’t her favorite, she enjoyed working at the zoo.

“Not only do you get out of school but you also get to learn from your community and how important your government is to the community,” said Leishman.

Pocatello Mayor Brian Blad said this is a great opportunity for students to get involved.

“These are the students that will grow into our future leaders,” said Blad. “We hope this will be a valuable learning experience for all involved and we believe their time spent with City officials will be fun and memorable.”
