Pocatello teen charged in death of motorcyclist

Clayton Scott, 18, has been charged with a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter for the death of a motorcyclist.

Darrell Garza, 50, was involved in a motorcycle crash on Yellowstone Avenue in Pocatello in March.

Initial reports thought Garza had lost control of his motorcycle. But after investigating, police have found new evidence.

According to court records, police reports state traffic video footage of where the crash happened was obtained. Records state the video showed Scott failed to yield to oncoming traffic, cutting Garza off. This caused Garza to lock the brakes on his motorcycle to try to avoid collision. This caused him to lose control and crash. Garza was thrown from his bike and hit his head on the pavement. He was not wearing a helmet.

Prosecutors have now charged Scott with a misdemeanor in Garza’s death.

Scott will appear for his pre-trial later this month. He is also facing another misdemeanor charge unrelated to the motorcycle accident. It’s a misdemeanor for racing on a public highway.

Scott has pleaded not guilty to both charges. He will appear for pre-trial for both misdemeanors on June 30.

Prosecutors had no comment on this case, as the investigation is still ongoing.
