West Nile Virus found in Bannock County mosquitoes
Officials at the Bannock County Mosquito Abatement District said mosquitoes have tested positive for the West Nile Virus. The mosquitoes were found in three adult surveillance mosquito traps. Mosquitoes in a fourth trap are suspected to be positive and have been sent out for further analysis.
Mosquito Abatement Director Dave Herter said the traps were located near Inkom, the northwest corner of Chubbuck’s city limits, and Scout mountain recreation area.
The traps give the district a picture of what types of mosquitoes are in an area and how best to control them. Herter said infected mosquitoes usually show up in late July to mid-August.
Bannock County crews have re-treated the areas where the positive traps were found. Herter said crews fogged the four areas Wednesday night. They will be re-setting mosquito traps and re-analyze results Monday night.
In the meantime, people are advised to wear long sleeved clothing, stay inside when mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, and use an insect repellent that contains DEET. Herter also encouraged homeowners to remove or agitate any standing water where mosquitoes might breed.
