Infections might come with going back to school

In a week or two kids will be off to school again, but that also means more chances for children to catch something and get sick.

Head lice, chicken pox, pink eye, bronchitis… children could be at risk for each of these.

“Kids aren’t always the best at cleanliness issues. Either their immune systems or their ability to know when something is wrong isn’t a good as adults’,” said family practitioner Dr. Brad Erickson.

Back to school time is the time to be super cautious of the potential infections brought home by children. And for smaller kids, it could be a little worse.

“If you’re a new baby and you get put in the day care, I guarantee you’re gonna be sick for quite a bit. It’s almost like getting used to whatever new bugs are there,” said Erickson.

However, a lot of these infections can be preventable.

“A good hand-washing always trumps anything else we can ever do. Hand washing with soap. The sanitizer stuff isn’t bad, but sometimes the best thing is soap with good friction and rubbing. There’s a lot to be said about preventative things. Eating good, getting good rest – sleep – making sure you’re washing your hands. Cleanliness is very important,” said Erickson.

Parents, educate your child early on hygiene. Encourage them to keep their hands away from their eyes and mouth.

And as always, if something doesn’t seem right, go to your family doctor or pediatrician to get a quick handle on the infection before it spreads or gets worse.
