Update 08-17-16 7:15 a.m: The Toponce Creek Fire is burning 214 acres and is 10 percent contained.
Crews are fighting a wildfire near South Putnam Mountain in Caribou County.
The Toponce Creek fire was originally reported Monday afternoon and crews were dispatched to investigate. The fire is located 8 miles north of Big Springs.
After the initial smoke report, an 8 man Smoke Jumper crew jumped into the fire and three 20 man hand crews started suppression operations. Air support is actively dropping fire retardant along the fire’s edge.
There is limited access to the area which is slowing crew response. Crews have to hike about 4 miles in rough terrain to reach the area.
Bureau of Land Management doesn’t have an estimate yet on when the fire will be contained but no structures are threatened at this time and no evacuations have been ordered.
