The lightning-ignited fire was detected early Friday, August 19, on the ridge between Bear Gulch and Black Canyon. The fire has been named the Black Fire and is burning in Douglas Fir and Subalpine Fir. It is only 1/4 of an acre at this time.

Smoke from the fire is highly visible from Highway 26 and the South Fork of the Snake River. Fire behavior is minimal, mainly smoldering and creeping. The fire is located approximately 12 miles northwest of Swan Valley, Idaho.
