District 93 School Board Holds Special Meeting Over New H.S. Name

One week after unanimously approving the name “Black Canyon High School” for a new school being built near Crowley and First, the Bonneville Joint School District is holding a special meeting to discuss the concerns of parents.

The name was approved by the board after a naming committee narrowed the list, and finally settled on ‘Black Canyon High School’. Parents in the district say the the board did not give them enough input.

“There’s been some incredible people in the community who have come up with some great ideas for mascots and great names, ones that we didn’t even see hitting the naming committee,” parent Tammy Jolley said.

The Bonneville Joint School District took notice of concerns like Jolley’s after a petition showed up on Facebook.

“There’s a lot of people who like the name,” Superintendent Dr. Charles Shackett said. “Then there are a lot of people who don’t like that name.”

The district says the current board policy used to name the new high school has been used six time before when new elementary schools were built. No one complained when those names were decided.

Superintendent Shackett and Board President Brian McBride says the district hears the concerns of the parents. The board will hold a special meeting on Thursday, September 22nd to consider changing the policy and whether to keep the approved Black Canyon name.

That meeting will take place at 4:00 p.m. At the district office on North Ammon. It is open to the public.
