Idaho Falls Zoo welcomes new arrival

Idaho Falls Zoo at Tautphaus Park announced the birth of a guanaco Tuesday.

A guanaco, also known as a chulengo, is often confused with llamas. They are members of the camelid family from South America. According to the Zoo, they are a wild ancestor of the llama and similar to appearance to domestic llamas. Both guanacos and llamas are cousins to camels, minus the hump.

The new baby is a female and has not been named. She was born on exhibit and was walking within minutes of the birth. The father is being housed off-exhibit since male guanacos can sometimes be aggressive toward newborns.
