Trucker accused of keeping women as sex slaves gets 20 years
A Utah trucker who pleaded guilty to keeping women as sex slaves in his semi-trailer as he drove across the country has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Timothy Jay Vafeades (vah-fea-AH-des) said Wednesday he was sorry for not recognizing what a monster he was.
One of the victims says she was repeatedly sexually assaulted as he controlled everything she did.
Federal prosecutors say Vafeades lured two women ages 18 and 19 to his truck, then forcibly altered their appearances and ground down their teeth while holding them prisoner and brutally beating them for months.
The 56-year-old man pleaded guilty in June to two counts of transporting for illegal sexual activity.
Prosecutors say Vafeades had four more victims in the two decades before his arrest and abused them in similar ways.
