Competitive food drive a huge success

After just one week of collecting food at Highland and Pocatello high schools, students were able to fill five trucks.

Wanting to help the community and hoping to get more food, students at both high schools decided to host the joint food drive the week of Oct. 31 to spur competition.

Initially, the food was only going to go to the Idaho Food Bank and Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25’s in-school pantries. However, after seeing how much they got, the students decided to add the Salvation Army and the Idaho State Veterans Home to the list.

While it was a contest, the students were happy just to have helped out the community.

“It was just a humbling experience to be able to see how little things can affect people in a big way,” Highland High School student McKinlee Saunders said.

Kenda Van Horn, a Pocatello High School student, agrees.

“I just love helping people, that’s why I joined the Junior Civitan Club. It was a really fun experience,” Van Horn said.
