Parking Restrictions in Idaho Falls Begin After Snow Falls Exceed 2 inches
It is not easy plowing snow off of narrow streets when cars are parked in the way.
Some streets are even left unplowed if equipment cannot safely drive down the roads.
The city of Idaho Falls is working to decrease this hassle and make it safer for drivers, because of this.
The city of Idaho Falls said the most helpful thing people can do is move their cars off the street and encourage their neighbors to do the same.
Snowfalls exceeding two inches is considered a “snow event.” This means snow removal on the roads.
Anyone parking in specific narrow roads will get a ticket or possibly be towed.
“What we’re trying to do is provide a level of service based on the comments that we received from the public,” Fredericksen said.
Fredericksen said this idea came up as they examined surrounding communities in Montana and Utah that have snow removal similar to Idaho.
“And so we tried to take those best ideas and meld that with our own activities here, to meet the needs that have been expressed by our public,” Fredericksen said.
In Downtown, even calendar days are restricted north and south during snow events from midnight to 8 a.m. east and west roads are restricted on odd calendar days from midnight to 8 a.m.
For Zone A, no parking on even days on the north and south streets from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On odd days, there is no parking for the east and west streets from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
For Zone B, which is the majority of the city, the restriction includes no parking for all streets at anytime.
Fredericksen says one of the things they have been trying to stress is for people to refer to the city’s website to know how to respond to snow events.
“We’d also encourage people to sign up for text alerts so that they have latest and greatest information by the city to deal with snow removal activities,” Fredericksen said.
The city ranks these areas on a scale from 1 to 3:
Priority 1: Higher use arterial streets such as 17th Street, Hitt Road and Sunnyside Road. Priority 2: Minor collector streets, including streets serving emergency response facilities and schools. Priority 3: All streets not designated as priority 1 or 2.
