Persky inks with Pecos League

After serving in the military for four years, Sean Persky didn’t think he would ever hear his name called to take the field again, until the Gate City Grays called.

“Terry Fredrickson came up to me and he said ‘hey want to come out and tryout for our team?” Persky said.

In his one year playing for the Grays, Persky helped them win their second straight Southern Utah League championship, a moment at Halliwell Field that he’ll never forget.

“Just having the roar of the crowd, feeling the city 100 percent behind the team felt awesome,” Persky said. “Having family there, having friends, playing with your buddies that you’ve been grinding out the last couple of weeks with.”

Persky will move to Texas this summer to play for the Alpine Cowboys, an independent baseball team in the Pecos League.

“It feels pretty amazing. Putting in a lot of hard work, taking a long time off from the game, being presented an opportunity with the Grays organization to play this last year, it was something very special,” Persky said. “I’m going to always be grateful for them and the city of Pocatello for even allowing the team to be here. It feels pretty special being able to move on with my career.”

“It’s super bittersweet,” Terry Frederickson, the owner of the Grays said. “You look at this and you go ‘man, what a great player for us, how are we going to replace that?’ Now the job gets cut out for Erica and I and our coaching staff trying to find that replacement.” Persky went to Texas to try out for the Texas Air Hogs. There, he was approached by a scout in the Pecos League. Persky then sent the scout more video of him playing and that’s when the Cowboys offered him a one year contract. “Growing up, you have coaches throughout your life telling you that if this is what you want in life, you need to work hard for it,” said Persky. “It’s pretty cool to see that if you stick with something, anything in life that it can come to bear fruit for you.”
