Bulge slows down traffic on US 191

The Wyoming Department of Transportation is keeping a close eye on US 191 at about milepost 133.8 in Sublette County. The damage is located in a switch-back type area called “the Rim” between Daniel Junction and Bondurant. Maintenance crews reported cracking of the highway and a large bulge. Pavement has dropped about 6 inches in the last couple of days. According to District Engineer Keith Compton, “It’s basically due to the excessive moisture in the ground as well as the continual melting of snow feeding water into this area as temperatures warm.” WYDOT Geologists and engineers are continuing to monitor movement of the road and investigating potential solutions. Maintenance crews are working to patch the affected area and smooth out the bulge. Speeds have been reduced to 30 mph in the area.
